An account of the sinking, in Sept. 1857, of the SS Central America, a sidewheel steamer carrying 600 passengers returning from the California Gold Rush, and the efforts in the 1980s of Tommy Thompson to penetrate the deep-ocean floor and recover her treasures: gold coins, bars, nuggets, and dust plus trunks filled with period clothes, newspapers, journals and much more.
