In 1948, the minor league Milwaukee Brewers have an abysmal record, and manager Arthur Murphy is desperate to improve the team. When he sees seventeen-year-old Mickey Tussler pitching apples into a barrel, he knows he has found a phenom that will end the team's losing streak. However, not everyone is as hopeful. Mickey's autism has alienated the boy from his surroundings, and he faces immense challenges from both the competitive world of baseball and the obstacles that are inherent to his condition- a disorder still not truly understood even today.
